About Education Technology Industry’s Principles for the Future of AI in Education

From tutoring and test preparation to assessing learner performance to relatively simple tasks like checking the spelling and grammar of a document, AI technologies are and can have great impact on teaching and learning. Because of this and in order to realize AI’s promise, stakeholders must address and mitigate risks attendant to these technologies. These principles intend to guide the ed tech industry as the broader education community continues toward deploying these impactful technologies.

Committee Members

The AI in Education Steering Committee convened over the course of several months to develop this list of principles for the education technology industry. The Committee will continue to develop resources in the coming months.

This set of principles is not intended to be an industry pledge, commitment, or legally binding document. It is intended to help guide the industry’s development of responsible artificial intelligence that meets the needs of students, educators, and families.

Supportive Statements

SIIA has taken the initiative to put a stake in the ground for effective, responsible implementation of AI technologies in education by developing these recommendations in collaboration with representatives from the education technology industry.

We were delighted to collaborate with fellow ed tech companies in crafting this crucial set of industry principles.

These principles represent a necessary first step as education technology companies work to carefully and thoughtfully incorporate AI into their solutions. As with any nascent technology, understanding the real-life impact on students and teachers is paramount. It’s encouraging to see the edtech community collaborating to develop these guardrails for AI.

SIIA continues to demonstrate its ability to convene industry leaders to collaborate to author, support and champion these principles for the safe, accountable, fair and efficacious use of AI in our education ecosystem.

When developed responsibly, AI technologies have immense potential to advance educational equity by supporting educators in personalizing students’ learning experiences. GoGuardian supports SIIA’s industry-wide principles for responsible AI in education as an important step toward ensuring AI tools continue to center the needs of all students, parents, caregivers, and educators.

We’re pleased to support our industry’s new AI principles. Artificial intelligence, like many innovations before it, presents the world of education with a vast opportunity for exploration, disruption, and advancement. By deploying AI responsibly and purposefully, and with these principles as a guide, we can make great strides toward unlocking the potential of learners around the world.
